We offer a wide variety of valuable opportunities to meet the needs, interests and talents of our students across the performing and visual arts areas of the school.

Not only can students take Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Art/Photography as subjects at every year level, but they are also encouraged to involve themselves in an array of arts events and competitions outside the classroom. These opportunities provide ‘real life’ conditions that help to embed their learning and develop skills such as problem-solving, time management, collaboration, communication and confidence. These skills are essential for 21st century learners and support all other areas of their schooling and their lives beyond secondary school.

We hold four showcase and exhibition events each year to present and celebrate the work of our learners at junior and senior levels. These are always well attended and enjoyed by our community and become one of the highlights of the students’ experiences in learning through the arts.

Every year, we stage either a school production or a ShowQuest entry which involves approximately 100 cast and crew.

We also regularly offer opportunities to enter local and national competitions, festivals and arts exhibitions. Just a few of those events that have been well attended are listed below:

  • DanceNZmade
  • Shakespeare Festival
  • The Big Sing
  • Chamber Music Competition
  • Rockquest and Pacifica Beats
  • Whanganui Arts Review
  • Whanganui Walls Art

Our cultural council, made up of senior students, meets regularly to help organise such events and the various cultural house competitions held within the school. Students who excel in a particular cultural aspect or arts area of school are also formally celebrated for their endeavours and achievements at our annual cultural awards evenings.
